Vertigo

What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is classified as rotational dizziness. In the mildest cases of vertigo, you will feel dizzy and off-balance, like you are slowly spinning even though you are not moving. More severe cases report intense spinning and symptoms like headaches, nausea, tinnitus (or ringing in the ears), and hearing loss.

There are several different types of vertigo; but in almost all cases, inflammation and irritation to the vestibulocochlear nerve seem to be at the root of the problem. The vestibulocochlear nerve is responsible for encoding the body’s head motion and position as well as sound. This nerve feeds through the inner ear labyrinth. When there is irritation or inflammation in the inner ear, the nerve stops functioning the way that it should and the signals that it sends are no longer accurate or complete. So it makes sense that irritation to this very important nerve interferes with its function and would cause a loss of balance, spinning, and sound challenges.

Chiropractic and Vertigo

By removing the interference to the vestibulocochlear nerve, the function should be restored and the symptoms of vertigo resolved. In many cases, this can be done through specific chiropractic adjustments. The goal of specific chiropractic care is to locate and remove nerve interference (subluxations) and by doing this, restore normal nerve function so that the body can heal. Many patients see their symptoms of vertigo drastically decrease or disappear entirely under a course of specific chiropractic care. No drugs, no surgery, just simply supporting your body’s natural ability to heal and be healthy.
