Allergies are a Immune Response Controlled by the Nervous System

The immune system is designed to recognize foreign invaders (i.e. viruses, bacteria, and toxic chemicals) in the body and help to neutralize the threat and restore balance to the body.

Allergies are a caused from a hypersensitive immune response. The body is over-reacting to a normal or minimal level of a foreign invader, that a healthy immune system would be able to recognize and neutralize without the excessive reaction, which is the case with an allergic reaction. The body may even start confusing the difference between itself and foreign invaders and start attacking itself, which is the case in auto-immune disorders (i.e. Rheumatoid arthritis and Lupus).

There is still much debate as to why the body would develop this hyper reactive response and that is not for this page. What we can offer is the fact that there is an intimate relationship between the body’s immune system and nervous system. In fact there are thousands chemicals (known as neurotransmitters and cytokines) used to communicate between the two systems within the body. Going back to the basic scientific principle that the function of your spine is intimately related to the function of your nervous system, it is easy to see why many patients see positive changes in their allergies with chiropractic care.
