Falling leaves are pretty. Falling people? Not so much. 🍂
Here in Pittsburgh, fall means wet leaves on the sidewalk, rakes and ladders in the yard, and a busy holiday season right around the corner. It’s also the perfect time to talk about something most of us don’t think about until it’s gone: balance.
Here’s the good news. Balance isn’t something you either have or you don’t. It’s a skill your body uses every single day, and like any skill, it can be practiced. That goes for every age in the family, from the toddler learning to run to the grandparent who wants to keep enjoying the grandkids.
This November, our theme at Turo Family Chiropractic is Fall Prevention: Balance, Strength and a Healthy Spine. Let’s look at how it all fits together.
Mobility: better movement = better health
Mobility isn’t just stretching. It’s how well your joints move, how your muscles work, and how freely your spine supports your everyday life.
When mobility starts to slip, you may notice:
- Stiffness getting out of bed
- Tight shoulders or neck tension
- Low back discomfort
- Less flexibility than you used to have
And mobility isn’t just for athletes. Kids need healthy movement to grow. Adults need it to get through the day. And as we get older, mobility is what keeps us independent. That’s why we care for the whole family.
Flexibility, strength and endurance: you need all three
A well-rounded movement routine includes three kinds of movement. Try to fit a little of each into your week:
- Endurance: walking, biking, anything that keeps you moving longer.
- Strength: strong legs and a strong core are what catch you when you trip.
- Flexibility and balance: stretching and balance work that keep your joints moving and your feet steady.
Focusing on just one can leave you out of balance (literally!). You don’t need to be an Olympic athlete, either. The goal is simply to be a little better today than you were yesterday.
Where your spine fits in
Your spine does two big jobs. It holds you up, and it protects your spinal cord, the main highway of your nervous system. That’s the same nervous system running the balance team we just talked about.
Dr. Dan often compares a healthy, moving spine to a windmill: motion keeps the energy flowing. When an area of the spine gets stuck or out of place (we call that a subluxation), it can interfere with how clearly your brain and body talk to each other. Think of a phone call with bad reception.
At our office, we don’t guess. We use thermal scans to see how your nervous system is adapting, and Dynamic Motion X-ray to watch your spine move in real time. It shows us two things:
- Areas that aren’t moving enough. As Dr. Dan says, “Where your spine isn’t moving is where we need to go.” Those are the areas we adjust.
- Areas that move too much. We leave those alone and strengthen around them instead.
Adjust what’s stuck. Strengthen what’s loose. That’s how a healthy spine and a strong, steady body work together.
And now we have something new to help: Kinetisense 3D Motion Capture. A 3D camera looks at how you move from head to toe, measuring posture, balance, flexibility and range of motion, with no sensors or special equipment. It’s not just about where you hurt. It’s about understanding how you move. Ask about it at your next visit.
5 ways to stay steady this fall
- Practice balance every day. A few minutes at the kitchen counter counts. Try Angela’s Marches for Balance or Heel to Toe, holding on lightly until you feel steady.
- Keep your legs strong. Try Angela’s Sit to Stand using a sturdy chair, then add Lateral Stepping.
- Make your home fall-safe. Clear walkways and cords. Use a sturdy step stool, never a chair. Hold the railing on the stairs. Add night lights for those late-night trips.
- Keep your spine moving. Regular spinal check-ups help catch stuck areas before they become bigger problems. We brush our teeth and see the dentist without a second thought. Most people don’t start caring for their spine until around age 45. Imagine going 45 years without seeing a dentist!
- Know how you move. A Kinetisense assessment or a session with Angela can show you exactly what to work on.
You’ll find all of Angela’s balance exercises in her Movement Minutes playlist.
Before you try an exercise: stand next to a counter or sturdy chair. Move slowly. Stop if anything hurts, and ask us if you’re not sure whether an exercise is right for you.
Graceful aging starts today
You can’t stop birthdays, but you do get a say in how you age. Dr. Dan calls it graceful aging vs. accelerated aging. Accelerated aging means waiting until something hurts before you pay attention. Graceful aging means staying ahead of it: moving every day, keeping your muscles strong, and keeping your spine and nervous system checked.
There’s an old proverb Dr. Dan loves: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is now.” It’s never too early, and never too late, to start.
